Medicines for Vomiting and Nausea are commonly called Antiemetics. These can be purchased without a prescription from a doctor. They can effectively treat vomiting episodes, upset stomach, motion sickness and act as pain relievers.
A common active ingredient in nausea or vomiting medicines is Bismuth subsalicylate. It helps in treating nausea and vomiting and gastroenteritis (stomach flu). It’s also used for upset stomach and as an antidiarrheal (medicine to treat diarrhoea). Pepto Bismol is a common brand medicine that can help relieve nausea and ease the stomach lining.
Another common range of ingredients is Antihistamines. Certain types may help prevent nausea and vomiting caused by motion sickness. These include dimenhydrinate and meclizine hydrochloride.
When taking a vomiting medicine, take only the amount recommended on the medicine’s label or the box. Taking more medicine will not make it work better. Small amounts, as described on the label do the job just fine. Taking more than the required amount may result in side effects.
Adults usually don’t experience side effects from antiemetic medicines. Having said that, some side effects may include:
- Darkened stools or tongue
- Constipation
- Ringing sound in the ears (tinnitus)
It is also important to remember that some of these medicines can make you feel sleepy. The medicine may also affect how other medicines work in your body.
Over the years, several home remedies have popped up for treatment of nausea and food poisoning.
Some of these anti-nausea remedies include:
- Deep breathing
- Eating dry biscuits
- Drink fluid, and lots of it
- Aromatherapy
